 Further information:

All matwork classes provided at Durham Pilates Studio are small and offer a general group session for all round body conditioning that is suitable for men and women of all ages. The exercises are performed in various positions on a comfortable mat, usually on the floor, but sometimes on a raised surface to help those with lower mobility (see below!).

At Durham Pilates Studio, we keep our classes small (max. 10 participants) to ensure quality of instruction and improved results, with each class progressing over time as clients develop. We pride ourselves on offering as much individual attention and guidance as possible to help meet personal goals, taking account of the need to support any ongoing injuries or other issues by adapting exercises where required. Whilst exercises are demonstrated ‘from the front of the class’ where required, we teach by walking around the room to guide individuals with the use of touch in addition to verbal instruction.

Most of the challenge provided by matwork arises from the use of personal bodyweight working against gravity. In addition, our matwork clients often benefit from the regular use of small equipment (e.g. balls, bands, chairs) to add interest and to assist or challenge the body as needed. Clients who find it difficult to get down onto the floor can be accommodated by taking advantage of the large equipment available in the studio which can support the use of mats positioned above floor level. Many exercises can also be performed using a chair or fit ball (sitting ball).
